Defence Drone Procurement Checklist: What Indian Buyers Should Assess Beyond Flight Time and Range
A practical checklist for procurement teams: support, serviceability, training and supply-chain questions to ask every vendor.
When a team evaluates a defence drone, flight time and range tend to dominate the comparison. They are easy to put in a table. They are also rarely what decides whether a programme succeeds a year later.
1. Support and serviceability
Ask who repairs the platform, how long repairs take and whether spares are held in India. A drone that is grounded for weeks waiting for a part delivers nothing.
2. Training
Check whether the supplier trains operators, how that training is structured and whether it can be repeated as personnel rotate. Training is part of the capability you are buying.
3. Supply chain
Ask where critical components come from and how exposed the supplier is to a single source. Questions about continuity are far easier to ask before a contract than after it.
4. Fit with your mission
Describe your mission to the vendor and ask how the product handles it. A good supplier will tell you where a platform is not the right choice.
5. Documentation and data handling
Confirm what documentation is supplied, how software updates are delivered and how data from the platform is handled.
6. Commercial clarity
Look for clear terms on lead time, minimum order, warranty and what happens if requirements change.
A short list to take to every vendor
- Who services the platform and where?
- What training is included or available?
- What are the lead times for platforms and spares?
- Where do key components come from?
- What documentation will we receive?
- What are the commercial terms for follow-on orders?
